Walk the colorful cobblestone streets of Cartegena and you can’t miss the faniciful knockers that adorn the old wood doors. A vestige of the 16th century Spanish saying, “a tal casa tal aldaba,” or “to each house its door knocker,” the design of the knocker historically signified the social status or profession of resident. If you knocked on a door with a lizard-shaped knocked, best be wearing your finest clothes as these were the homes of high society, typicaly with connections to the Spanish royal family.
